05.08.26 – \"\"Mark Nicholas<\/strong>, who started off as a tech\/manager when the lab first started, was hooded in the PhD graduation ceremony today. Of all of the graduating students across MCS, he was selected to give the Student Address, with the associate dean commenting on his impressive publications, commitment to mentoring and teaching, and that “he needs to introduction”.
\nCongrats Mark!!!!<\/p>\n

04.22.26 – A big day at the Neural Control of Movement meeting in Kobe Japan.\u00a0 Eric delivered an invited talk on our work surrounding policy-gradient learning and in the next session was followed by lab alum Sami Johnson<\/strong> (now in Nicho Hatsopoulos’ lab) discussing functional connectivity changes during learning.<\/p>\n

03.20.26 – Eric is invited to present at the monthly SWEBAGS (SWEdish BAsal Ganglia Society) with Henry Yin, discussing a control theory-based perspective on how the striatum enables reinforcement learning.<\/p>\n

02.25.26 – Collaboration breeds success. Eric was a feature interview for a recent Nature<\/span><\/em> article discussing the importance of University Libraries to enabling better, and especially in our case, more open research.\u00a0 Read it here!<\/a><\/p>\n

02.16.26 – In a radio interview this morning<\/a>\"\"<\/a>, Eric discussed the lab’s recent work with KCBS San Francisco. It went great but admittedly was a little scary, as it was a LIVE<\/em> interview.<\/p>\n

02.11.26 – Paul Middlebrooks<\/strong> and Eric gave an invited talk to the Brain-Behavior Quantification and Synchronization (BBQS) consortium<\/span>, featuring our tools for behavioral quantification (A-SOiD, B-SOiD, and realtime) and Paul’s exciting new results on meta-stability and criticality of the circuit through different brain and behavioral states.<\/p>\n

\"\"02.04.26 – Basal Ganglia GRC was a big success.\u00a0 Many great conversations and ideas shared with the community. There were excellent talks by now-faculty Matt Geramita<\/strong> on his Nature Neuro paper from his postdoc, and by Eric – which prompted the session chair to announce that the basal ganglia no longer does go\/no-go!\u00a0 Now-faculty Jyotika Bahuguna’s postdoctoral work with Julia Badyna also won best poster! Mark Nicholas<\/strong> also had a long discussion at his poster with the editor from on of the Nature journals.
\n<\/strong>Lastly, Eric had a special moment. Here’s a picture of Matt being introduced by Eric’s postdoc advisor, Josh Dudman (sorry, it was dark on stage).<\/p>\n

01.07.26 – NATURE PAPER PUBLISHED!<\/strong> A team effort to quantify behavioral hallmarks of pain and analgesia using gene therapy is out today, featuring a stellar collaboration with Greg Corder’s group at UPenn: Mimicking opioid analgesia in cortical pain circuits.<\/a><\/p>\n

12.05.25 – Big paper out today highlighting Matt Germaita<\/strong>‘s postdoc work on how The Striatal Indirect Pathway Mediates Hesitation.<\/a> Super proud of this impressive body of work out now at Nature Neuroscience.<\/em><\/p>\n

09.26.25 – Congrats to newly minted Dr. Mark Nicholas! <\/strong>Mark gave a fantastic thesis defense and received the longest round of applause I’ve heard in a while. Well deserved! Mark is off to start his postdoc at Janelia Research Campus in the spring.

08.26.25 – Alex Hodge<\/strong>‘s huge findings about policy-based reinforcement and striatum are now published in Cell Reports<\/em>!<\/a> Direct pathway stim can produce prolonged stopping! \u00a0Indirect pathway stim can make mice turn contralaterally or ipsilaterally!
\nIt turns out, the brain cares about context – and Alex’s creative approaches help reveal how reinforcement of policies can come about<\/p>\n

08.06.25 – Mark Nicholas<\/a> gave a great talk to the (international) ALM\/Cortical Circuits Journal Club about his recent Neuron paper<\/em><\/a> and multi-area encoding model results<\/p>\n

08.05.25 – Eric had a great time giving a lecture and behavior demo at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s Imaging Course with Tim Murphy, and Helen Hou. Many thanks to the organizers Hod Dana and Adam Charles – and all of the brilliant, creative, and driven students that really made it worth it!

06.03.25 – We would also like to welcome, Macie Hakim<\/strong>, a rotating MD\/PhD student from the University of Pittsburgh into our lab! Macie will be working alongside Mark Nicholas on some PD-related science.<\/p>\n

05.28.25 – We would like to welcome, Michaelina O’Rourke<\/strong>, our summer undergraduate intern from Haverford College! She will be spending her time here with Kevin Wright, working on his decision making in a continuous environment task.<\/p>\n

05.20.25 – Congratulations to Mark Nicholas<\/a> for receiving the People’s Choice Poster Award at the Probing Sensorimotor Circuits and Perception Across Species Meeting at the University of Pittsburgh!<\/p>\n

05.14.25 – One of our Masters students, Darrick Lo, is going to be in Irvine, CA this summer doing an internship in bioinformatics! While we will miss him here in the Yttri lab, we are excited for him to have this opportunity and cannot wait to hear all about it when he returns this fall.<\/p>\n

03.27.25 – Aden Eagle and Eric Yttri attended the first day of the COSYNE conference in Montreal, where Aden Eagle presented his work via poster titled, “Representations of naturalistic behavior over hours at the level of single neurons and population dynamics”. 01.30.25 – New semester, new rotation student. We are happy to have Grayson Matthew join us this spring. Grayson is a PhD Student in Neural Computation at Carnegie Mellon University. We look forward to seeing what they will contribute to our research!<\/p>\n

11.08.24 – We would like to officially welcome Kevin Wright to the lab! After spending the past few months rotating in our lab, he has decided to join us as a PhD student in Neuroscience. While here, Kevin will be working on neural representations of decision making in continuous environments. We cannot wait to see what he will contribute to our lab!<\/p>\n

11.01.24 – Huge news! Matt Geramita just received a Notice of Award for his K08 grant, the MD\/PhD version of a K99. Congrats Matt!!<\/p>\n

10.18.24 – We are extremely proud to present our very own, DR Julia Badyna, who successfully defended her thesis today! Post-graduation, Julia plans to work at BCG. We cannot wait to see her continue to thrive in this new chapter. CONGRATS!<\/p>\n

09.25.24 – Congratulations to Mark Nicholas for being a recipient of the MCS Graduate Conference Funding Award. Mark along with Eric Yttri and Aden Eagle will be attending the upcoming Society for Neuroscience Conference in Chicago, October 5th – October 9th.<\/p>\n

08.26.24 – We are very happy to welcome two new rotation students to our lab, Christa Michel and Kevin Wright! Christa is a Systems Neuroscience PhD Student at Carnegie Mellon University and Kevin is a Neuroscience PhD Student at the University of Pittsburgh. They both have awesome backgrounds in research so we are super excited to see how their extraordinary knowledge and skillsets play a role in our research here in the Yttri lab!<\/p>\n

08.28.24 – Super proud of our past undergraduate student, Anna Cappella, for receiving the Nicolai-Fustanio Scholarship Award<\/a>. This award is given to \u00a0a senior who has achieved academic success while pursuing other experiences outside of the classroom. Excited to see where Anna goes from here, we know she will do great things!<\/p>\n

10.10.23 – We are so very proud to present DR Alex Hsu, who successfully defended his thesis today. \u00a0Alex was the driving force behind the unsupervised machine learning method of behavior classification, B-SOiD, the supervised approach for behavioral extraction, A-SOiD, and some of the most exciting large-scale neurobehavioral data from motor cortex and striatum that we’ve seen in a while. \u00a0CONGRATS!!!<\/p>\n

09.01.23 – Also, let’s welcome to the lab, Dr. Paul Middlebrooks! Fun fact about Paul is that he created The Brain Inspired podcast which he still operates himself to this day. In the Yttri lab, he will be working on multi-area dynamics underlying naturalistic behavior. We are very much looking forward to having Paul be a part of our team!<\/p>\n

03.01.23 – Eric had a great time talking about the CMU array and its potential applications, including in quantifying the neural correlates of spontaneous behavior at Bin He’s Neural Engineering lectureship.<\/p>\n

01.27.23 – As a product of the great science and community of the lab, Eric has been promoted to ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR! THANK YOU TO THE TEAM FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK!!!<\/p>\n

01.12.23 – Our lab helped organize what is turning out to be a fantastic conference with leaders in CompBio and Physics: \u2018Biophysics and Quantitative Biology in the AI Era\u2019 Conference<\/a>‘. 12.16.22 – At the Allen Institute, Eric had a great last hurrah with his fellow NextGeneration Leaders, including Mark Cembrowski, Bianca Jones Marlin, and Michael Lodato. It was great learning about some incredible new projects there and meeting a new class of young innovators

10.28.22 – At the CRCNS meeting in Atlanta, CMU was well represented – including talks by Eric, Matt Smith, and a keynote lecture from Byron Yu. This meeting featured our joint work\/grant with Tim Verstynen and Jon Rubin, and particularly this exciting Plos Comp Bio paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n

10.14.22 – After his special lecture at University of British Columbia, Eric was quite impressed with the great computational\/experimental neuroscience going on there!<\/p>\n

02.03.21 – Eric was just invited to lead give a talk to the German Transregional Collaborative Research center on neuromodulation and disease and to moderate the Allen Institute Open For Science symposium, both in March.<\/p>\n

12.28.21 – Congrats to Julia Badyna on passing her Thesis Proposal! She’s building a computational and cell-type specific blueprint for corticostriatal mechanisms underlying choice behavior under varying levels of volatility. Very exciting!<\/p>\n

12.14.20 – Arula Ratnakar, who teaches fellow undergrads neuroscience in a fantastic online StuCo course and does some thrilling art (writing, drawing) and science was featured in a College news story! Learn more about her diverse talents!<\/a>

11.23.20 – Congrats to Alan Lai for winning a Small Undergraduate Research Grant to understand the computational mechanisms underlying spontaneous behavioral decisions. Alan’s work has been the result of him pursuing his neuro and statistical interests, and we’re really excited to see what he finds.<\/p>\n

11.18.20 – Welcome (back) to the lab, Mark Nicholas. After starting the lab with Eric as a technician, he’s continuing on in his study of the cortico-striatal dynamics underlying movement performance<\/p>\n

10.05.20 – Are there Huntington’s disease\u00a0<\/span>hallmarks before diagnosis can be made? In a f<\/span>antastic reader’s pick write up in eNeuro<\/a> by our lab’s own Julia Badyna, she\u00a0goes over an exciting launch point for future work in early HD therapeutic intervention.<\/span>\u00a0We’re excited about the work that captures the innovation on both the molecular and behavioral side, and hopefully provides impactful insights to HD therapies<\/p>\n

09.20.20 – We’re excited to receive a CRCNS grant from the NIH! This will fund work on the neural basis of decision making with Tim Verstynen, Jon Rubin, and Cati Vich Llompart (Spain). Julia is already training mice to explore how neural populations modulate strategy in the face of volatility… particularly apropos as of late.<\/p>\n

08.06.20 – Vishal wrote an excellent summary<\/a> of the Kanold Lab’<\/a>s ToneBox and the state of automated, open tools in behavioral neuroscience – published through eNeuro.<\/p>\n

03.13.19 – Latest publication!\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0In this Biorxiv pre-print, Parley and Mark describe and benchmark our easy-to-build mouse joysticks that enable closed-loop stimulation in realtime as well as complex reaction time and probabilistic learning tasks.<\/p>\n

03.06.19 – RECEIVED FIRST R01, JUST 18 MONTHS SINCE STARTING THE LAB!!!!!!!!!<\/strong>
\nThis grant is to create a fully customizable, 3D printed ultra high density electrode array, in collaboration with Dr Rahul Panat. This array will ultimately be used to record from thousands of neurons across several targeted brain regions to answer questions concerning neural mechanisms of action and improvement of AI transfer learning algorithms.<\/p>\n

10.10.18 –\u00a0The Yttri lab published a new review<\/a> about the potential for optogenetic research to improve deep brain stimulation!<\/p>\n

09.07.18 – Congratulations Eric Yttri for winning the Kaufman New Investigator Award. The goal of the proposal is to explore how multiple brain areas work together to learn and improve movement. More details on the award can be found here<\/a><\/p>\n

08.15.18 –\u00a0Congratulations Eric Yttri for winning the Whitehall Foundation Award. The 3 year grant will cover how cortical and basal ganglia interactions orchestrate movement and value-based decisions<\/p>\n

05.30.18 –\u00a0Congrats to the ‘Deep Nets\u2019 team for winning the CMU Neurohackathon<\/a> using our lab\u2019s dataset of reaching \/ hundreds of simultaneously recorded cortical and striatal neurons!<\/p>\n
